Civic Literacy Workshop

Mission Gen Atlantis’ Civic Literacy Workshop was designed to make governance, law, media literacy and public participation accessible to young people through interactive, real-world learning.

Held as a three-hour online workshop, the session introduced students to the fundamentals of how governments and institutions function, how laws are made, the role of rights and responsibilities, and the ways media, misinformation and agenda-setting can influence public understanding. Rather than approaching civics as something confined to textbooks, the workshop used case studies, discussions, debates, simulations and current-affairs analysis to help participants understand how civic systems operate in practice.

Students explored national and international issues, examined how to assess headlines and policy decisions critically, and developed the confidence to engage more thoughtfully with the institutions and public conversations shaping their lives. The programme was designed to be accessible even to participants with no prior background in civics or public policy, while still offering depth for students already involved in debating, MUNs or current affairs.

The workshop also included interactive engagement elements and a lucky draw with gifts for participants, helping keep the experience energetic and participatory while the core focus remained on building civic confidence, critical thinking, media literacy and informed public participation.

Ultimately, the workshop reflected one of Mission Gen Atlantis’ central goals: helping young people move from simply consuming information about the world around them to understanding it well enough to question, evaluate and participate in it.
